Want a figure that’s only sold in Japan? This guide shows you exactly how overseas fans order from Japanese shops — even when the shop doesn’t ship abroad or the site is Japanese-only.
This post may contain affiliate links in the future. We only recommend services we would use ourselves.
TL;DR
- Many Japanese shops do ship overseas directly (AmiAmi, HobbyLink Japan, and others) — always check this first, it’s the cheapest route.
- If the shop is Japan-only (Animate, Surugaya, many limited editions), use a proxy service like Buyee or ZenMarket: they buy the item for you and forward it to your country.
- Proxy shopping adds service fees + domestic shipping + international shipping. Expect roughly 25–50% on top of the item price for a single figure. Bundling several items into one shipment saves a lot.
- Preorder deadlines in Japan are strict. When a figure says “orders close August 4,” that means August 4 in Japan time (JST) — often a day earlier in the US.
Route 1: Shops That Ship Overseas Directly
The simplest way. These shops have English sites and ship internationally:
| Shop | Good for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| AmiAmi | New figures, preowned | Huge selection, preowned grades explained in English |
| HobbyLink Japan | Figures, model kits | “Private Warehouse” lets you combine shipments |
| CDJapan | Music, books + some figures | Reliable for media |
| Solaris Japan | Figures incl. rare/aftermarket | Prices higher, but stock of sold-out items |
Ordering from these works like any online store: make an account, pick international shipping at checkout, pay by card or PayPal.
Watch out: popular preorders sell out fast even on these sites. If a figure is gone everywhere, that’s when proxies come in (Route 2).
Route 2: Proxy Shopping (For Japan-Only Items)
A proxy service gives you a Japanese address and buys on your behalf. The flow is the same everywhere:
- Sign up for a proxy service (free).
- Paste the URL of the item you want (from Amazon Japan, Rakuten, Animate, Surugaya, Mercari, etc.) or search inside the proxy’s site.
- The proxy buys it and it ships to their Japanese warehouse (domestic shipping applies).
- Consolidate — wait until several items arrive, then have them packed into one box.
- Choose international shipping (see cost section) and pay. It arrives in 1–4 weeks depending on the method.

Which proxy should you use?
- Buyee — the biggest name, connected directly to Yahoo! Auctions and Mercari. Interface is polished. Charges per-item fees plus optional services like protective packaging (check their fee page for your shop type).
- ZenMarket — a flat fee per item (¥500 for most shops, ¥300 for select stores, ¥800 for Mercari and auctions), with no percentage cut. Easy to calculate, good first proxy for beginners.
- FROM JAPAN — strong for auctions; its charge plans differ by how you use it, so compare against ZenMarket for your typical order.
For your first order, ZenMarket’s flat fee is the easiest to understand — you can sign up for free at zenmarket.jp.
What It Actually Costs: A Real Example
Say you buy a ¥15,000 scale figure through a proxy and ship it to the US:
| Cost item | Amount (example) |
|---|---|
| Figure price | ¥15,000 |
| Domestic shipping (shop → warehouse) | ¥800 |
| Proxy service fee (ZenMarket standard) | ¥500 |
| International shipping (courier, ~2kg boxed) | roughly ¥4,000–7,000 (varies by region — check at checkout) |
| Total | ≈ ¥21,000–23,000 (~$140–155) |
Rules of thumb: the bigger the box, the more shipping dominates. Shipping 3 figures together often costs only slightly more than shipping one — consolidation is the #1 money saver.
Customs: depending on your country you may pay import tax on arrival. US buyers note: the de minimis exemption (no duty under $800) ended in 2025 — most packages to the US are now subject to duties, so factor that into your budget. EU/UK buyers pay VAT. We cover this in detail in our upcoming customs guide.
Common Mistakes
- Missing the preorder deadline because of time zones. Japanese deadlines are JST. Set a reminder one day early.
- Shipping figures one by one. Always consolidate. Ten small shipments can cost double one combined box.
- Buying “too good to be true” prices on marketplace sites. Bootlegs are common for popular figures. Stick to known shops. (Our bootleg-spotting guide is coming soon.)
FAQ
Q: Can I preorder a figure through a proxy?
Yes. Proxies can place preorders, but note that payment timing and cancellation rules are stricter than regular orders.
Q: What’s the cheapest international shipping?
Surface mail is cheapest but takes 1–3 months. EMS and couriers (DHL/FedEx) are faster but pricier. Rates change often — always compare the options your proxy shows at checkout.
Q: Is proxy shopping safe?
The major services (Buyee, ZenMarket, FROM JAPAN) are established companies. The main risks are damage in transit (buy protective packaging for figures) and bootlegs on marketplace listings.
Q: The shop cancelled my order through the proxy. Why?
Some Japanese shops refuse proxy orders, especially for limited items with purchase caps. It happens; the proxy refunds you.
